My 11th-grade language arts teacher told us to write a “Found Poem.” A found poem is a poem that combines lines from various poems. My friend, Yashi, and I wrote this poem using lines from amazing poets during the Harlem Renaissance. We hoped to capture the extreme celebration of black culture during the time period in our poem. Hope you enjoy it!
Darkly I gaze into the days ahead,
They send me to eat in the kitchen.
And be ashamed —
Genome editing, otherwise known as gene editing, advanced the field of biotechnology for ages to come. Genome editing is a group of technologies that gives scientists the ability to change an organism’s DNA. The editing allows genetic material to be added, removed, or altered at a specific location within the genome, an organism’s complete DNA.
There are many methods to complete genome editing, but the CRISPR-Cas9 system is the latest biotechnological advancement with the most given outcomes. In terms of research, the CRISPR-Cas9 system is favored by the scientific community because it’s faster, cheaper, more accurate, and more efficient than…
Although the ability to vote is open to any United States citizen, the country was not always in open arms in regard to the concept “voting for all”. The idea of voting, for the newly independent United States, began in the 1700s.
In the early stages of America’s independence, voting was limited to white property holders. Despite the belief of democracy as the main founding principle, the founding fathers executed severe voting restrictions for minorities and those with a low socioeconomic status.
Feminism hasn’t always been the feminism that we think about today. Over the last few decades, the concept of feminism has drastically changed in its core values and motives. Similar to technology, feminism adapted to its surroundings while sticking to the main value: equal rights for women.
First-wave feminism pioneered the way for the next three feminist waves yet to come. The goal of this movement was to earn basic legal rights, such as voting, citizenship, and property.
It emerged out of an environment of urban industrialism and liberal, socialist politics in which almost all positions of power were held…
Artificial intelligence, a new technological advancement, is starting to take the world by storm. Artificial intelligence, otherwise known as AI, is the science and engineering of making intelligent machines, specifically intelligent computer programs. AI is related to the task of using computer programs to observe human intelligence, but can not be confined to only using methods that are biologically observable.
AI research and discussion started in 1947 when Alan Turing became the first to decide that AI was best researched through computer programming rather than by making machines. His lecture led the way to future AI research that led to…
The foster care system has been implemented in the United States government for many centuries. The foster care system takes youth from unstable familial locations into homes that are considered safe. Often, however, these homes aren’t ideal locations for the foster youth to stay.
These unstable locations cause further problems for foster care youth including mental illnesses and risk of homelessness. Their truth and the system’s inefficiency often goes unnoticed. It’s time for things to change.
Mind Grid is an organization and page that advocates for mental health awareness while providing accessible resources to all regardless of age, gender, race, ethnicity, religion, sexuality, or socioeconomic status.
Here at Mind Grid, we believe that mental health should be prioritized, and the negative stigma around it shouldn’t be apparent in society. Mental Health needs to be a priority for all people.
Over the last century, business was considered to be a man’s game. Whenever we referred to the millionaires and billionaires of the world, we only could spurt out male names, but times are changing.
Women are now leaders and frontrunners in the fields of entrepreneurship. They are CEOs and founders of their small and large businesses with a large range of products or services beneficial to the community.
Female entrepreneurship is rapidly rising over the last couple of years. Between 1997 and 2017, the number of women-owned businesses increased by 114 percent, a rate 2.5 …
Many people describe shelter dogs to be “savages” or “consistently angry,” nut that often isn’t the case. The negative stigma surrounding shelter dogs leads to a large population of dogs who never get adopted to pile up in shelters.
With restricted local government budgets, animal shelters are often faced at the end of their ropes throughout the year with a lack of funding and thus heavily rely on donations to help their animals.
Rutgers University described the average cost to take care of a shelter dog to be from $374 to $658, and many shelters don’t have to facilities to…
